Nornickel implements large-scale Clean Norilsk program

April 11, 2022

This year, 400 000 tons of garbage and 45 000 tons of scrap metal will be removed from the city.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Last year, the Nornickel launched a large-scale ten-year Clean Norilsk program for sanitary cleaning and improvement of industrial areas, which later became part of the Clean Arctic federal project. During the spring and summer, more than a million square meters of land were cleared of debris in the Norilsk industrial region.

The large-scale cleaning includes the demolition of unused buildings and structures, pipelines, communications and networks, as well as the cleaning of scrap metal accumulated around industrial facilities. Work continues in the winter also.

So, in February of this year, specialists began cleaning up territories at 15 industrial facilities.

The This Is Taimyr has visited one of the sites where specialized equipment works non-stop every day to make the territory of the Arctic cleaner.

On the snowy peak, which cannot be climbed without an all-terrain vehicle, once there was the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant boiler room No. 2. During the period when Nadezhda, the second nickel plant in the northern city, began to be built, the boiler house provided heat for the construction base. More than 20 years ago, the facility was put out of action: over time, its metal structures rusted, and the building itself became unsafe.

Today, two excavators are working non-stop at the facility, one of which is equipped with attachments – hydraulic shears. They easily capture high-strength materials and, if necessary, crush them.

It is important that the assembled metal structures will not be stored at a specialized site. They will be cut and taken to the mainland for further processing.

As for equipment, the Nornickel’s territory management and landscaping department has 121 pieces of equipment, which cost the company 3.4 billion rubles.

This year, they plan to dismantle about 100 objects, remove up to 400 000 tons of garbage and 45 000 tons of scrap metal, and clean up to two million square meters of territory.

Nornickel plans to invest almost six billion rubles this year to implement the activities of the Clean Norilsk project.

Recall that in the next ten years, thanks to the Nornickel’s large-scale program, 500 abandoned buildings and structures will be dismantled in the Norilsk industrial area, two million tons of waste and 600 thousand tons of scrap metal will be removed. The total amount of financing for Clean Norilsk is 40 billion rubles.

Earlier, we told that Nornickel had planned more than a hundred environmental strategy events.
