#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. To respond to permafrost degradation in Russia, it is necessary to create a comprehensive law. This was stated by the Eastern Development Ministry’s first deputy head Gadzhimagomed Guseynov.
At a meeting of the State Duma Committee for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic, Guseynov recalled that certain changes are already being made to the legislation, a permafrost monitoring system is being created, RIA Novosti writes. However, the measures taken are not enough, the deputy minister noted.
“We support the idea of the possibility of adopting a separate legislative act on permafrost, which would include the entire range of issues, including monitoring, construction issues, and other aspects related to responding to permafrost degradation. I think that today, more than ever, the need to develop such a law is ripe”, Guseynov said.
The Eastern Development Ministry’s representative noted that thawing of permafrost, which covers two-thirds of the Russian Federation’s Arctic zone territory, is constantly accelerating. By 2050, according to scientists, the bearing capacity of these soils will decrease by more than half, which is especially dangerous for industrial and civil buildings.
“The warming process has disrupted the stability of permafrost soils, which creates serious risks for the stability of buildings and structures. The processes have especially accelerated in the last five years. In particular, in some Arctic villages the number of deformed buildings has increased to 50 percent of their total number”, the deputy minister explained.
