#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The stations of the Arhangelsk network are located on the archipelagos of Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya. The northernmost seismic stations in Russia recorded the earthquake in Turkey, scientists will use this data to study the Arctic.
“Stations of the Arkhangelsk network recorded this event, and we continue to record aftershocks now. Recorded on Novaya Zemlya, and on Franz Josef Land, and on Severnaya Zemlya. This earthquake will be taken into account to clarify the deep structure of the lithosphere in the western sector of the Russian Arctic”, Galina Antonovskaya, head of the laboratory of seismology at the Federal Research Center for Comprehensive Study of the Arctic, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told TASS.
Data on a major earthquake in the European part of the continent was recorded at Arctic seismic stations for the first time. The equipment was installed on Franz Josef Land in 2011, on Severnaya Zemlya in 2017, on Dikson in 2020, and on Novaya Zemlya a stationary seismic station began operating in 2022. Previously, there were no seismic stations in these territories. Now their data make it possible to obtain information for building geological and seismic models.
Earlier we reported that Russia is reviving the program of drifting polar stations.
