#dubakchallenge gaining momentum in Norilsk

February 07, 2022

Norilsk residents use boiling water to create a picturesque ice salute.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A few years ago, the Siberia inhabitants defied the cold and launched the Dubak (severe frost) Challenge on the Instagram social network. Its essence is to throw a container of hot water over your head. As a result, a bewitching pattern is formed in the air, similar to a white salute.

Instantaneous freezing of boiling water in the cold has a scientific name – the Mpemba effect. Scientists still cannot explain or disprove this phenomenon. The Norilsk people do not stand aside and often publish such photos and videos. For example, photographer Mikhail Podolyak captured the Mpemba effect at the entrance to Norilsk (the photo above).

“I took pictures like this last year as well. Despite sub-zero temperatures, it’s not easy to take a beautiful photo in Norilsk because of the wind, which, as you know, is a frequent phenomenon in the city. For example, to get a high-quality photo, we used four thermoses, but the result was worth it”, Mikhail explained.

For three years, residents of the Arctic and Siberia have already published more than five thousand photos under the #dubakchallenge hashtag. The lower temperature is the more effective photos you will get.
