#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Great cormorants are developing more and more territories of Krasnoyarsk region, the birds populate the hydroelectric power stations reservoirs’ banks along the Yenisey and Angara and move further north. The expansion of the range and the growth of the number of these birds threaten the destruction of valuable fish species in the Yenisey.
The great cormorant can reach 100 centimeters in length and weigh up to three kilograms. The birds dive to a depth of about four meters and stay under water for up to 40 seconds. An adult eats up to 750 grams of fish per day.
As TASS reports with reference to Vladimir Yemelyanov, associate professor of the Hunting Resource and Nature Reserves Studies department at the Siberian Federal University, cormorants feed on grayling, whitefish and peled.
According to experts, the growth in the number of colonies is due to favorable conditions and the absence of natural enemies. Only at the Boguchanskaya hydroelectric power station reservoir, the number of cormorants reaches 35 thousand.
According to scientists, permission to hunt cormorants can somehow regulate the number of this species. Now cormorants can only be hunted in places where indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East live; these birds have not yet settled in the north of Krasnoyarsk region. Now scientists are counting the total number of cormorants in Central Siberia.
We also wrote that a seagull from Taimyr was seen in the south of the Barents sea, and a beetle unknown to science was discovered in the vicinity of Norilsk.
