#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A year after its start in Murmansk, the Clean Arctic – Vostok-77 scientific expedition has completed all sections of the route in the Arctic and Siberia, the expedition’s board of trustees’ head Oleg Volkov reported. Research has been completed in the territory of the last region – along the Kamchatka peninsula route.
Over the course of the year, the expedition participants conducted environmental mapping, carried out work to identify ethnic toponyms, and also formed a pool of informants among indigenous peoples.
“Among the unique Kamchatka studies, I can note the study of changes in the Gorely volcano caldera and the peninsula’s eastern coast’s recreational opportunities. The formation of the Kamchatka researchers team has begun, they will take part in compiling a modern academic atlas of Kamchatka, which will include the main passes, lakes and waterfalls, as well as natural objects of the peninsula with their authentic names”, Oleg Volkov noted.
Work is currently ongoing in the Magadan region and the Ohotsk sea. In the fall, field trips will take place to Taimyr, Kamchatka and the Yamal-Nenets autonomous district. Scientists will complete field research that was started during the expedition’s route from Murmansk to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
According to the head of the expedition’s board of trustees, the official completion of the route is scheduled for December 15, 2024.
Recall that Clean Arctic – East-77 is the largest in terms of the number of participants among continental high-latitude scientific expeditions in the entire history of Northern research. The route runs through 77 territories.
Expedition participants found more than 400 abandoned objects in the Arctic. During the expedition, Arctic all-terrain vehicles were tested in Taimyr.
