#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Clean Arctic volunteers have arrived on the research vessel Mikhail Somov at the northernmost point of Eurasia – cape Chelyuskin. It took them a whole month to get to their destination, the Clean Arctic website reports.
The volunteers have already conducted a preliminary survey of the area and met a polar bear, the organization reported.
It is specified that the group includes six specialists from the construction field, as well as electricians and engineers. At the first stage, they will repair the technical and living quarters of the old weather station, thereby ensuring year-round residence and future research work for scientists, researchers and volunteers.
“We will now prepare premises for volunteers for next year. We have a biological treatment plant there, a generator, showers, a kitchen – everything necessary for a civilized life in the Arctic. And at the same time, we will assess the pollution situation, understand how dire the situation is, and start cleaning”, said Clean Arctic volunteer Alexander Selivanov.
The first expedition will last two months, but it is expected that trips to Chelyuskin will become regular. Based on this season’s cleanup results, the Clean Arctic project, together with the Northern UGMS of Roshydromet, will develop recommendations for cleaning the Arctic zone.
Earlier, This Is Taimyr reported that Clean Arctic would develop rules for waste disposal from remote locations.
