#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The expedition Clean Arctic – Vostok – 77 completed its work in Yakutia and moved to Chukotka, where it will collect information about abandoned industrial and infrastructure facilities that require disposal or additional conservation in order to reduce their impact on the environment.
“Today, the objects of the Murmansk, Arhangelsk regions, Nenets and Yamalo-Nenets autonomous districts, Taimyr and Yakutia have already been put on the map. All that remains is to collect and place cartographic information on objects in Chukotka”, said Stanislav Lachininsky, a member of the expedition headquarters.
The resulting map will help state corporations, Rosatomflot and the Northern Sea Route directorate plan the loading and routes of ships that will be able to remove several hundred thousand tons of equipment from coastal objects discovered by the expedition, TASS reports.
Clean Arctic – Vostok – 77 is the largest continental high-latitude scientific expedition in the entire history of Northern research in terms of the participants’ number. In total, during the year there will be about 700 participants from more than 20 centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences and federal universities, as well as the Russian Geographical Society volunteers. They will conduct over 200 studies on routes stretching 12 thousand kilometers. One of the expedition objectives will be the study and preservation of rare northern languages.
Earlier, we reported that the Clean Arctic movement plans to join the Rosprirodnadzor Bear Patrol program to preserve the polar bear and prevent encounters between predators and people.
