#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In the Arctic, the height of the ground changes. This was established using new technologies of the space system, which was used in two high-latitude expeditions in 2023 and 2024.
Focusing on the results of scientific research in the field of space and aerial photography, scientists stated the importance of using special electronic maps in the North that reflect changes on the Earth’s surface.
In the North, changing river beds, lake shorelines, and heaving soil under buildings and pipelines pose particular dangers. Therefore, the need to use a new type of terrain maps is obvious, scientists say. New maps will be able to reflect new objects discovered by scientists as a result of recent expeditions.
“From a satellite or aircraft that regularly flies over the area under study, you can notice an increase or decrease in the ground level by one centimeter. This is important for monitoring the condition of roads, pipelines and other linear objects that may collapse under the influence of soil deformation. Special ground-based equipment allows us to monitor changes in the soil”, said expedition participant and polar explorer-instructor Andrey Igolkin.
“Russian geography is going through a very interesting period today – a period of new geographical discoveries. The reason for this is two factors: first, there is a general digitalization of all information and the analysis of digitized data makes it possible to see new, previously unnoticed aspects, objects and processes on the map, and second, new technologies for instrumental and aerial photography have made it possible to study hard-to-reach areas”, says Russian geographer and State Duma expert Oksana Tolstyh.
According to scientists, modern electronic self-updating maps are just a matter of time, writes SeverPost news agency.
Previously, we wrote about the development of master plans for Arctic cities using a digital platform. In general, digitalization of Arctic projects can double their potential. We also reported that our media company’s site Severny Gorod is among the eight best regional media in the country.
