#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. A new Arctic Integrated Emergency Rescue Center (AIERC) will appear this year in Pevek. Now all construction and installation work has been completed here and staffing is underway.
AIERC form the basis of a comprehensive security system for protecting the population, territories and objects critical for national security in the Russian Arctic zone from threats of natural and man-made emergency situations.
Six emergency rescue centers of the Emergency Situations Ministry have already been created and are operating in Dudinka, Murmansk, Vorkuta, Naryan-Mar, Yakutsk and Arhangelsk. The total number of personnel is over 300 people, the units are equipped with more than 160 pieces of equipment.
The issue of forming emergency rescue centers in the villages of Sabetta, Dikson, and Tiksi has been worked out in detail. Their necessity for the Russian Arctic is due to the growth of ongoing infrastructure projects and the increase in cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route. The coastal areas development creates additional anthropogenic pressure on the region; the man-made emergency situations risks in the Far North are also associated with the permafrost degradation and tourism development.
The Arctic integrated emergency rescue center in Pevek, by decision of the department’s leadership, became a pilot project. The unit consists of 50 specialists who will work in two shifts. On its basis, issues of organizational structure, number, technical equipment and operation will be resolved.
“Further work on the creation and development of centers in Sabetta, Dikson and Tiksi will be based on risk models for each specific area and the experience of operating the pilot Arctic integrated emergency rescue center in Pevek”, noted the Emergency Situations Ministry head Alexander Kurenkov.
To reduce response time to emergency situations, the department is also considering the creating air links in the Arctic zone.
Seven deployment locations have already been identified for the Arctic aviation group of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, the press service of the ministry reports.
