#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Permafrost degradation is now responsible for 29 percent of lost oil and gas production from Arctic fields. By 2050, the damage to the Russian economy from thawing permafrost could reach seven trillion rubles.
This figure was voiced at parliamentary hearings on the permafrost issues legal regulation, TASS writes. At the same time, in 2021, experts estimated losses over 30 years at five trillion rubles.
According to Alexander Stotsky, the Arctic Development Project Office’s general director, the forecast worsening is a serious problem sign.
“It is necessary to intensify work on studying the nature and temperature changes dynamics in the Far North. Partially, this task will be solved with the permafrost state monitoring system launch, the bill is now under consideration by the State Duma”, Alexander Stotsky explained.
In the future, according to the speaker, it will be necessary to develop methods for effectively counteracting destructive processes in permafrost soils.
Recall that SibFU scientists believe that the Arctic permafrost preservation should become a federal task. Earlier at the Arctic Forum, Norilsk’s experience in saving permafrost was discussed. This Is Taimyr also told how permafrost preserved chocolate and other products in Baron Toll’s “refrigerator”.
