#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The development of the Arctic should become a national project in Russia, according to the Higher School of Economics National Research University (HSE NRU). According to scientists, industrial enterprises and research centers should take part in the national project, and the Northern Sea Route will play a key role.
The role of the Arctic in the development of Russia is much higher than that in other countries, scientists say. The region accounts for about ten percent of Russia’s GDP and 20 percent of the country’s total exports. The natural resources of the region should become the basis for high-tech industries and service companies serving Arctic projects.
In addition, scientists insist on maintaining the special legal status of the Arctic. The United States and a number of other countries insist on averaging it. This will lead to the appearance on the territory of non-Arctic countries, which will affect the ecology of the region.
“Opening of the Arctic also poses a threat to the current international legal regime of navigation in the region, which secures the exclusive rights of the Arctic countries, which, in turn, leads to an even greater increase in military-political and environmental threats to security”, say HSE specialists.
Earlier it became known that traffic along the Northern Sea Route can become year-round in the coming years. Russia is currently building the world’s most powerful icebreaker fleet. We also reported that the Russian government has invested 110 billion rubles in Arctic projects.
