Arctic climate sharp change cause may be planetary waves

May 04, 2023

Physicists from St. Petersburg have established that fluctuations in atmospheric parameters cause temperature changes.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The reason for sharp fluctuations in temperature at high latitudes may be changes in the parameters of the Earth’s atmosphere, lasting for more than two weeks. This conclusion was made by the researchers of St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU).

Physicists, using a mathematical model, studied the effect of planetary waves with periods from 3 to 16 days on the large-scale circulation of the atmosphere – these are global fluctuations in such parameters as pressure, density, temperature, and wind speed. The duration of ‘ebb and flow’ can reach 30 days, writes RIA Novosti with reference to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Experiments have shown that the waves may well cause disturbances in the stratosphere, which lead to extreme warming and cooling in the Arctic zone and temperate latitudes.

Previously, scientists suggested that the acceleration of the water cycle in the Arctic could affect the entire ecosystem. Russian geophysicists believe that the Arctic could heat up sharply due to powerful earthquakes. The ice in the Arctic has become thinner, and its life – shorter.
