#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. In Taimyr, 14 wild reindeer were tagged with satellite collars, another 11 will get beacons until the end of June. To carry out this work, the Krasnoyarsk region ecology ministry and the Siberian Federal University signed a contract, the Krasnoyarsk region government’s official portal reports.
The GPS/GLONASS satellite system receivers are built into the collars. Thanks to this technology, specialists will be able to continuously track the wild reindeer paths in the process of migration. The devices are easy to attach, painless and do not harm animals.
Such work is necessary for the rational hunting resources management. Data on the number and migration routes of animals are relevant not only for scientists, but also for local residents. For the North indigenous peoples, hunting wild reindeer is a traditional activity and one of the main life-supporting factors.
Based on the results, the research second stage will take place – an aviation census of the Taimyr reindeer population. It will be held in 2024 on an area of at least 370,000 square kilometers.
It is known that according to the aerial monitoring results in 2021, the number of wild reindeer in the region was about 250 thousand individuals, while a few decades ago more than 900 thousand wild reindeer lived in Taimyr: the number began to decline sharply after the 1990s.
