#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. At a meeting of the expert council of the State Duma Committee on Ecology, the creation of an all-Russian permafrost monitoring system was discussed. The project is implemented by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute on the basis of Roshydromet. Recently, the government supported the bill on permafrost monitoring.
The first points of the project are planned to be put into operation in 2023, the AARI said. By the end of the program, in 2025, there will be 140 permafrost monitoring stations in the Arctic and Siberia.
AARI scientists are preparing a list of 180 Roshydromet stations that are promising for placing monitoring points, and are studying them on the spot. By the end of this year, experts have examined 47 stations in the Arctic and Siberia, of which 22 were recognized as the most suitable for the installation of new special equipment.
“The system we are creating will make it possible to prepare maps with an assessment of the dynamics of changes in the state of permafrost and, on their basis, make more accurate forecasts about the possible consequences of these changes for the environment and the socio-economic development of territories”, commented Alexander Makarov, the AARI head.
In Norilsk, the historical building of the Talnah department store became a turning point on the way to the development of permafrost. Now control over the permafrost in the city is moving into fundamental science. Norilsk’s experience in preserving permafrost was discussed at the International Arctic Forum. Nornickel is helping to create new monitoring systems.
