Ice airfields to appear in Russian Arctic

August 25, 2020

The technology for changing the ice structure was developed at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

The project was named Site. According to Evgeny Storozhuk, vice-rector for Economics and Innovation of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University, the project is intended for the continental territories of the Arctic Circle and involves the creation of pre-fabricated ice airfields. “We are working with the Ministry of Defense in this direction,” TASS quotes Evgeny Storozhuk.

The military is offered to modify the ice cover with the help of chemicals, which, as conceived by the authors of the idea, will prepare the runway for the heavy aircraft takeoff and landing. The strength of the ice strip and the presence of cracks on it will be checked by fiber-optic sensors laid in its thickness. Reagents or freezing will ensure that the desired structure is maintained even during warming. In addition, it is assumed that the controllers of such aerodromes will be able to work remotely.

“Now we are testing technologies to confirm that our approaches are correct. This stage will last a year”, Yevgeny Storozhuk specified.
