Street, square and icebreaker in Norilsk named after Zavenyagin

February 10, 2022

The icebreaker Avraamiy Zavenyagin was launched on April 12, 1984. The diesel-electric icebreaker was built for the Soviet Union in Finland at the Wärtsilä shipyard.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The total power of the ship’s engines is 6.5 thousand horsepower. Its minimum draft is 2.5 meters, which allows it to move confidently in shallow water.

Now the ship belongs to the Nornickel Polar Transportation Branch. The icebreaker’s main task is the processing of berths to facilitate the ships mooring. During the flood period, Avraamiy Zavenyagin escorts third-party vessels and port fleet vessels to the sump channel for the period of ice drift.

In 2020, the Avraamiy Zavenyagin icebreaker participated in an 11-day rescue operation on the Yenisey. The crew helped rescue a caravan of seven vessels of the Siberia-RechTrans transport company, trapped in the ice near Igarka.

A square and a street in Norilsk are also named in honor of Avraamy Zavenyagin. And of course, the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Combine bore this name for 40 years.

Zavenyagin was the head of the Norilsk nickel combine construction in 1938. He headed the polar construction for a short time, but in the most difficult years. In 1941 he was already appointed Deputy People’s Commissar of the USSR Internal Affairs.

In the last issue of the History Spot photo project we told that Norilsk youngest streets with beautiful names Yugoslavskaya, Ozernaya, Valkovskaya and Brusnichnaya turn 30 this year.
