#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The first brick factory chimney was built 140 meters high. And at that time it was considered the highest one in Europe.
2.5 million bricks were used, locally made at the Norilsk brick factory. Three thousand cubic meters of concrete were laid in the foundation.
The laying of the pipe at the Big metallurgical plant was completed exactly by the new year. As the plant’s construction department dispatcher, Ariy Polyakov, formerly a famous climber and then a Norillag prisoner, recalled this event, the construction department head Volohov called him to celebrate his good work: “Come to the chimney. I will give a command to take you upstairs”.
“When I got up and went to the top”, Polyakov recalled, “I felt excited and at the same time nervous, because the amplitude of the oscillations was colossal, the pipe was swinging in all directions. There was no city yet. And we could see the tundra for many kilometers ahead”.
In the last issue of the History Spot photo project, we told about the youngest Norilsk district – Oganer.
