#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The unprecedented speed of the construction of the Oсtyabrsky mine was explained by the experience gained by the mine builders at Mayak and Komsomolsky mines, their high professionalism and constant competition. Half a century ago, newspapers, radio and television wrote and talked a lot about the brigades of Leonid Movshin and Dmitry Manzenyuk.
The Norilsk photographer Vladimir Chin-Mo-Tsai’s camera captured a rally half a century ago on the occasion of the all-Union record in the mining industry set by the Shahtspetsstroy (Specialized Mine constructing) brigade headed by Leonid Movshin. On November 12, mine builders completed high-speed tunneling at the second ventilation shaft of Octyabrsky. During the month, 151 meters of vertical shaft were driven, while the norm was 40 meters.
The rally was also attended by a rival team led by Dmitry Manzenyuk, who set the first record in September – 148 meters.
At the end of 1971, Movshin’s team would pass 155 meters of the vertical shaft in 31 working days. Before the start of the mine start-up in March 1974, there will be other record-breaking brigades, including those who drilled the horizontal drifts.
