#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Already in the late 1950s, northern women were taught to understand modern fashion trends. This was done by the city university of culture at the House of Political Education. There were lectures on the topic How to Dress Beautifully and demonstrations of clothing models, both women’s and men’s.
Norilsk women were offered 50–60 models of both evening dresses and business suits.
“We offer to your attention the best styles of ladies’ dresses made by Norilsk fashion designers” this is how guests were greeted at the clothing demonstration.
The fashionable clothing authors and performers were sewers and cutters from Norilsk ateliers. Sewing custom-made clothes at home or in a studio was common in those years. And in the stores there was more choice of fabrics than ready-made dresses.
Moreover, Norilsk specialized stores also offered help to city women in cutting and sewing clothes. This is how Edita Kuchkina, who worked in the central department store on Gvardeyskaya square, remembers it.
“The entire central hall of the department store was full of fabrics. There was also a cutting table where, when purchasing a piece, the selected model was cut for free. The store also had a tailor’s shop where ready-made clothes could be tailored. My task was to help the buyer choose a cut for the model and determine the footage. In Norilsk at that time, progressive forms of trade were actively used: they abandoned massive counters and switched to self-service, so that the buyer could touch and choose the goods himself. To promote trade, tailors sew fashion dresses which we demonstrated”.
In the History Spot’s previous publication, we talked about the memories of the first Norilsk residents who walked here.
