Active exploration carried out in Arctic and Taimyr in 1950s–1960s

August 29, 2023

Scientists from various geological parties and scientific institutes flew to the Arctic in the spring to go along their long-distance routes.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Our city for those expeditions was often the place of start and finish and, given the deserted territory, the only stronghold of civilization. Here they bought necessities, had bath and ‘culturally rested’.

Norilsk greeted such guests cordially, but it could not do without curiosities. For example, geophysicists from the Institute of Arctic Geology recalled such a case. One of the specialists who stayed on the route asked his colleagues, who flew to Norilsk to take some equipment, to hand over his dentures for repair.

The geophysicists fulfilled the task, but before leaving they decided to celebrate the successful start of the field season and lost the false jaw. After searching the hotel rooms, they dejectedly came to the restaurant where they finished their previous evening. The ‘detail’ found under the table was returned safe and sound, for which the Norilsk waitresses were repeatedly mentioned by geophysicists with a kind word.

In the History Spot’s previous publication, we said that the first sledge-tractor trains went from Dudinka to Norilsk for two weeks.
