Norilsk divers look for sunk plane

Divers set off on another expedition to the lake Lama to find a plane that sank there half a century ago.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. 12 Norilsk divers set off on another expedition to lake Lama. During a five-day stay in the wild northern nature, those who like to explore the underwater world tried to find the remains of the An-2 aircraft.

The story that in the 1970s there was a storm on Lama and the plane that was on the quay was carried far beyond its borders, and then because of the damage it went under water, the Norilsk people have been passing it on by word of mouth for many years.

For the first time, the head of the Nord Diving Club, Evgeny Babich, with his team went to look for the sunken aircraft back in early May this year. Despite the frosts, the divers explored the water area under the ice in the southern Neralah, as well as at the isthmus of the Kapchuk river, which flows into lake Lama. By the way, all equipment and equipment for diving in water weighs about two tons.

The spring expedition was unsuccessful. Therefore, the Nord team decided to return to the estimated locations of the aircraft and dive in the summer.

“The problem is that the locals, the Norilsk people, are talking about this story, referring to the words of other people. There is no person who would be a witness and show the point where the plane is. You should understand that Lama is not a simple lake: it is cold, very deep and large in area – more than 300 square kilometers. It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. This time we did not find anything, the muddy water complicated the work. There were storms, plus a lot of snow fell in winter – all this affected the visibility in the water. We are not giving up, I learned new locations where the plane could supposedly sink. Next season we will visit them, dive in and check these territories”, Evgeny Babich told.

In addition to the fact that the divers were looking for the remains of the plane, they removed the garbage after unscrupulous tourists. In total, the club’s team took out about a ton of waste, some of which were taken out of the water.

“Wherever we go, we collect and take away the garbage that other people leave behind. It seems that there is a garbage dump near the lake shores. The situation is aggravated by the fact that animals like to dig deeper into the waste and scatter it. Often in the water we find, in addition to garbage, fishing nets. We also throw them away in order to help in the restoration of the fish population. If we compare the number of fish in Lama ten years ago and now, then the difference is large. It has become much less”, said Evgeny.

The interlocutor emphasized that Lama is a beautiful lake of tectonic origin, which is rightfully called a miracle of nature. It is fraught with many mysteries, and underwater artifacts can tell about the history of this amazing place.

During his expeditions, Evgeny Babich repeatedly found under water many old boats, tools, for example, an ax. And this year, while diving after the X-WATERS competition plateau Putorana, they found an old pier.

“When we dived from the shore of the Lama-2 camp site, we found an old pier at a depth of 16–20 meters. It was made entirely of logs. For the entire period that the building is under water, it was overgrown with old knitted nets. We are curious about such finds, this is history, so we are exploring the waters of the Lama with interest”, summed up Evgeny.
