#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The VIII international tournament Nornickel Curling Cup has ended in the capital of Taimyr. Four women’s teams from Kazakhstan, Belarus and Russia competed for the title of the best team at the Taimyr ice arena.
The final gold medal match was intense. However, as often happens in sports, experience outweighed – and the first team with a score of 8:1 was Russia-2. Second place went to the Russia-4 team.
In the match for third place, Russia-1 turned out to be stronger. With a score of 6:3, the team beat the Belarus/Russia team and became the bronze medalist of the tournament.
“Every year we look forward to this tournament with undisguised impatience”, noted the head of Taimyr, Evgeny Vershinin, at the Nornickel Curling Cup’s closing ceremony. “This year it has been held for the eighth time. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our reliable partners and friends – the Russian Curling Federation and the Nornickel company. Thanks to joint efforts, the sports festival was possible to conduct”.
“Dear athletes, dear residents of the wonderful hospitable city of Dudinka, this is the eighth time we have held the tournament here, and each time we are greeted with more and more warmth. We always look forward to these tournaments and prepare for them. We thank Dudinka, the organizers and the northerners very much for this wonderful curling festival”, the Russian Curling Federation’s vice-president Sergey Venevtsev addressed the athletes and fans.
Let us remind you that before the cup’s start, eminent Russian athletes conducted master classes for the northerners. This year, Olympic biathlon champion, honored master of sports of Russia Dmitry Malyshko and Olympic silver medalist in individual sprint, honored master of sports of Russia Alexander Panzhinsky shared their skills with the Arctic residents.
Traditionally, the competition was organized by the Russian Curling Federation with the support of Nornickel. The company is doing a lot to popularize this Olympic sport among northerners, as well as to develop the region’s sports infrastructure. For example, it implements large-scale sports projects, including at the international level. In addition, the company acts as the main partner of many outstanding sporting events in Russia, making a significant contribution to increasing the sporting potential of our country.
Nornickel has been a partner of the Russian Hockey Federation, the Night Hockey League for several years, and supports the Russian Futsal Association and the Russian Curling Federation. At the same time, the company owns the professional basketball club CSCA, the professional mini-football club Norilsk Nickel, and a year ago, on the company’s president Vladimir Potanin’s initiative, the city got its own professional hockey club, Norilsk.
