Scientists to understand Arctic better

The Nornickel’s ships are installing sensors for measuring the temperature and salinity of water.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. It is no longer a secret for anyone that the Arctic zone is a strategically important region. Experts come to the conclusion that in the future its natural resources may become one of the main sources of raw materials for the entire planet. More than 20 thousand plant species, hundreds of thousands of microorganisms live in the Arctic zone, and the fish fauna, whose representatives are included in the Red Book, numbers 430 species.

At the same time, experts agree: the Arctic nature is fragile, low temperatures and long polar nights significantly slow down the development of organisms living there. And the decline in the population of even one species of animals can irreversibly disrupt the balance of interspecific relations. That is why it is very important today to conduct constant monitoring of the territory and water area of the Arctic for further analysis and preventive measures, which is what scientists from the Institute of Oceanology are doing.

The Nornickel company decided to give a helping hand to the scientists: the company installs special sensors for measuring temperature and salinity on its ships, which will provide a forecast of ice dynamics in the Kara sea. So, in the scientific community they expect to learn more about the change in thickness, speed and timing of ice melting and ice formation. It is reported that no one in the world has yet registered such information.
