Public spaces should be designed for winter

December 06, 2021

Urbanist Andrey Elbaev spoke about the landscaping principles in northern cities.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Well-known urbanist Andrey Elbaev @yelbayev, together with the @arcticametria design and research team, which designs the urban environment in northern cities, talked about the improvement principles, thanks to which activity in public spaces would not subside all year round.

Principle 1. Designing for winter

The space should first be designed for winter use. Solutions should take into account the level of snow and the way it is removed.

Principle 2. Sunny side

The main routes, recreation areas and playgrounds should be located on the sunny side for passive heating of the space.

Principle 3. Wind protection

Wind is a key factor in feeling cold. Landscaping, snow figures and small architectural forms should be used as wind protection.

Principle 4. Warm places

It is necessary to use existing and create new warm places – street fronts with showcases and pavilions where you can warm up and drink tea.

Principle 5. Physical activity

It is necessary to use objects and zones that motivate movement: playgrounds with an active scenario, paths on the relief, skating rinks, slides, etc.

Principle 6. Psychological comfort

Warm colors, functional lighting and materials should be used to create a feeling of warmth and psychological comfort.

Principle 7. Decorative lighting

It gets dark early in winter. For zoning spaces, creating coziness, navigation and stimulating activity, you need to use decorative lighting.

Principle 8. Adaptive furniture

It is recommended to use movable parts of outdoor furniture that allow you to adapt to weather conditions, turn towards the sun and turn away from the wind.

The Norilsk residents met the urban architect Andrey Elbaev in 2017. Within the walls of the Severny Gorod media company, he held a master class on how to properly shoot city videos.

Earlier, we told that the Taimyr Attraction square was opened in Dudinka, and the main stages of the renovation were discussed in Norilsk. The large-scale transformation of Norilsk will begin in 2022.
