#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. As part of a comprehensive program to support indigenous peoples of the North, Nornickel helped fishermen of the Arylar family and clan community to export a large batch of fish – 2.2 tons in total – from the Rassoha fishing point in the Pyasina water basin to Norilsk.
“We have been fishing here for 47 years. Over the past three months, we have caught about 2.2 tons. We get up at six in the morning and go check the nets: at seven in the morning, at two in the afternoon and at nine in the evening”, said Vladimir Smolyakov, a representative of the Arylar clan community.
The Rassoha fishing point is located 275 kilometers from Norilsk. In 2022, Nornickel helped communities purchase snowmobiles, boats, and ATVs.
This was a great help to the fishermen. From the ice cave where it is stored, the fish is delivered to the helicopter on ATVs.
“The fish caught by the fishermen will be delivered to Norilsk retail chains. At the same time, the community independently determines the buyers with whom it is most profitable to make an agreement. The fish is exported according to all established limits – the community has all the documents”, said Anfisa Nikiforova, head of work with indigenous minorities at the Nornickel Polar Division.
Nornickel pays special attention to supporting the traditional crafts of the indigenous peoples of Taimyr. This includes the development of domestic reindeer herding, assistance in preparing for the hunting and fishing seasons, as well as in the sale of products and the repair of ice stores at fishing points.
Nornickel helped the Arylar community repair the ice store that is over 40 years old – it holds over 300 tons of products.
Ten family and clan communities fish in the Pyasino area. Five communities have ice stores that require repair. The company helps with this. Nornickel exports fish at the request of the communities. In just four years, about 12 tons of products have been exported.
Assistance in selling the products of fishermen is just one of the activities of Nornickel’s large-scale five-year program aimed at improving the quality of life in villages and developing northern fishing industries.
The company provides support to the communities of the indigenous minorities of the North in creating new industries based on traditional nature management.
The program was developed by Nornickel with the participation of representatives of 40 communities that carry out traditional types of economic activity throughout the territory of the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets municipal district.
