Norilsk boxer becomes fifth at world championship among juniors

November 05, 2024

This is our first fellow townman participating in such a tournament.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. For the first time in the history of Norilsk boxing, an athlete from our city Oleg Klyuchagin, an athlete of sports school No. 4, got the right to compete in the Russian national team at the world championship. It was held in Budva, Montenegro from October 20 to November 4.

Recall that Oleg Klyuchagin is training under the guidance of coaches Maxim Trofimov and Vladimir Laznik. He earned a trip to the championship based on the combination of his sports achievements: at the Russian championship, where Oleg became the tournament finalist; at the Eurasian Cup Dauria (the Norilsk resident won a bronze medal). Oleg is also a two-time winner of the Siberian championship, a prize winner of the Russian championship last year and a participant in the VII International Games Children of Asia.

It should be noted that this year 593 boxers from 73 countries have taken part in the world championship. This is a record. For example, a year ago in Yerevan (Armenia) 357 boxers from 51 countries participated in the world championship among boys and girls under 16. According to Maxim Trofimov, our athlete’s coach, the organization was at the highest level, plus this is the only sport in which Russians compete under their own flag and anthem.

“Oleg competed in the 92 kilogram weight category, and, according to the regulations of the world championship, he had to wait eight days for his first fight, which, of course, was not good. In the first fight, he won by unanimous decision over the representative of Bulgaria, who, by the way, is a prize winner of the European championship this year”, shared Maxim Trofimov.

In the second fight for the medal stage, Oleg lost to the representative of Iran by disagreement of the judges, and during the fight, the Norilsk native knocked the Iranian down twice, but even this fact could not convince all the judges of our athlete’s superiority.

“Nevertheless, this has been a huge experience for both the athlete and the coach and will bear fruit in the future at performances of this level. I think that Oleg tried very hard, but not everything worked out in the fights, and I see that he can box better”, he explained.

We will also add that Maxim Trofimov, based on the results of the tournament, was included in the coaching staff of the Russian national boxing team and can be involved in working with the national team.

The overall results of the Russian team’s performance will be known in the next two days.
