Charity hockey match ended in Norilsk

March 16, 2024

Hockey Legends beat Norilsk team with a score of 11:6.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Norilsk team and Hockey Legends took to the ice. The guests were represented by a truly stellar team, which has remained almost unchanged for the seventh year: Pavel Bure, Vyacheslav Fetisov, Alexey Kasatonov, Igor Larionov, Alexander Mogilny and other star athletes.

“The difference between today’s meeting and the previous ones is that the star team includes players from four generations of hockey players. We are counting on the intensity of the game and a hot meeting”, Vyacheslav Fetisov said before the game.

The first charity match between the Hockey Legends and the Norilsk Night Hockey League team took place at the Norilsk sports palace Arctica on March 4, 2017. It is generally accepted that this particular match symbolized the return of big-time hockey to Norilsk. The first Night Hockey League team appeared in the city.

At each charity meeting, the Nornickel company doubled the amount from the game tickets sale and allocated funds to support and develop children’s hockey in the Arctic. In honor of the fifth anniversary match, the amount was tripled by the company. The sixth game was marked by the fact that Nornickel president Vladimir Potanin proposed creating a professional hockey club in Norilsk.

“Let’s thank the legends of our hockey and the Norilsk team for this wonderful holiday and fighting match! Since everything went so well in Norilsk with hockey, it seems that it’s time for the city to have its own professional club”, Vladimir Potanin said on the match day.

The game began, as often happens, with testing of the opponents’ strengths – probably because both teams replenished their rosters. For almost all the first half of the first period, the players took turns attacking each other’s goals, until the impatient Pavel Bure opened the scoring. The answer to such “insolence” was not long in coming – the Norilsk team immediately sent an answer performed by Evgeniy Timchenko to the guests’ gates…

Throughout the game, the pucks alternately hit the opponents’ goal. The Norilsk residents smartly attacked the enemy who did not allow them to get too close to himself. In the third period, the three-goal gap in the score looked quite standard for a meeting of this kind – the legends won, but did not get far behind their opponents. Just at that time, the 77th number of the Norilsk team, Nikolay Utkin, reduced the gap – 4:7.

Until the end of the match, the guests did not allow their opponents to get too close to the goal and were active in the opposing half of the field. But even with this, the Hockey Legends still conceded several goals from the home team. The last minutes of the seventh charity match looked even more intense, the guests were stronger – 11:6.

“The Norilsk residents’ skill is growing, improving – this should be taken into account. You know, this time I got really tired of chasing Utkin”, Vyacheslav Fetisov joked after the game.

The charity match between the Hockey Legends and the Norilsk team raised almost 3 million rubles; according to tradition, the Nornickel company doubled this amount. At the ceremonial summing up of the meeting, two certificates were awarded. The funds will again be used to develop Norilsk sports.

“The game, as always, is fire! When such people go on the ice, it is worth a lot, it gives impetus to such decisions as the creation of their own hockey club, the construction of new sports facilities and the development of sports in the Arctic in general. A lot has been done, but, believe me, new sporting achievements in Norilsk are still ahead”, Nikolai Utkin, Nornickel’s senior vice president, head of the Norilsk division, summed up the charity meeting’s results.
