Arctic Indigenous Peoples Summit opens in Moscow

November 02, 2022

The rally was timed to coincide with the International Decade of Indigenous Languages.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Representatives of 40 ethnic groups from the North, Siberia and the Far East gathered in the capital of Russia. The meeting is being held as part of the Peoples of Russia III All-Russian Forum and is included in the plan for Russia’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council in 2021-2023.

The summit will consider a set of the most pressing issues for the indigenous peoples of the North, including projects and initiatives to preserve the languages, cultural heritage and lifestyle of indigenous peoples.

It will also focus on the possibilities of the secondary vocational education system in the training of personnel for the preservation of languages, cultural heritage and traditional economic activities of the peoples of the Arctic, the use of digital technologies and new media in support of indigenous languages, regional projects and ethno-cultural initiatives.

Russia initiated and supported the Arctic Indigenous Peoples Linguistic and Cultural Heritage Digitalization project. The Russian side is working on the Arctic Digital Museums initiative, the Creative Industries as a Factor of Sustainable Development project. Our country presented the Indigenous Youth, Food Culture and Change in the Arctic project, aimed at studying the gastronomic traditions of the peoples of the North, promoting indigenous products and ensuring food security.

Another initiative in the Arctic Council, in which the Russian side is a co-leader, is the Arctic Food Innovation Cluster. The Russian chairmanship of the Arctic Council also for the first time brought the problem of protecting the intellectual property rights of indigenous peoples to the organization’s agenda.

At the summit, the participants will discuss the issues of socio-economic development of the indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East, the traditional economy potential, cross-border cooperation of indigenous peoples, the practice of registration at the place of residence of Russian citizens from among the indigenous peoples leading a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle.

Earlier, we reported on a proposal to legislate the status of a nomadic hunter and reindeer herder and to add chum workers to the professions list in Russia.
