During the autumn adjustment of the regional budget, the initiative of local governments of Taimyr districts to allocate funding for northern multi-event competitions was taken into account in the state program for preservation and development of the traditional way of life and economic activity of indigenous peoples, the Agency for Development of Northern Territories reports.
A decision was made to allocate 3.3 million rubles for this area this year. The funds will be received on a competitive basis by non-profit organizations that will ensure the participation of young northerners in northern multi-event competitions at the municipal, regional and federal levels.
For indigenous peoples, northern multi-event competitions are not just a sport, but rather a way of life. These sports disciplines originate from the everyday activities of northern peoples: chasing game, long treks through the tundra, taiga, fights with predatory animals. Each of the five disciplines (distance axe throwing, cross-country running with a stick, triple national jump, throwing a tynzyan on a horey, jumping over narts) has a beautiful legend that explains its origin.
This sport is today considered a cultural heritage of the small peoples of the North. In many schools in the Arctic areas of the region, the disciplines of the northern all-round are taught in physical education classes.
