International competition for Norilsk renovation started

July 14, 2021

In October 2022, it will become known who is engaged in the renovation of the city.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. Applications are open for participation in the international competition for the creation of an architectural and planning concept for the renovation of Norilsk until 2035. The initiators of the competition were the municipality and the Norilsk Development Agency, and the international urban laboratory CENTER Lab became its operator.

Let us remind you that in February the Russian government, Krasnoyarsk region, Norilsk and Nornickel signed a historic agreement on the social and economic development of the northern city. According to the document, the volume of joint financing of the program will amount to 120 billion rubles, of which 24 billion will come from the federal budget, Nornickel will allocate 14.7 billion, and 81.3 billion will be received from the regional budget. The company will allocate 150 billion more for the development of the city until 2035.

Thus, a large-scale renovation awaits Norilsk. Due to the geographical and climatic characteristics of the territory, the task becomes even more serious. That is why great hopes are pinned on the participants of the competition. They have to offer their solutions to increase the attractiveness of the city for life, study and work, improve the social activity of the city, improve the existing territories and develop transport and engineering infrastructures.

According to the head of Norilsk, Dmitry Karasev, the wishes and ideas of the townspeople will certainly be reflected in the concept of transformation:

“We all have to carry out a lot of work on the city’s renovation, which will include the renewal of the existing housing stock and the construction of new residential buildings, schools, kindergartens, clinics and other social facilities. The concept will allow, first, to understand the architectural and planning appearance of our city in the future. We are talking about a qualitative renovation of the city, which means that we will have to use the most modern materials and technologies. The competition for the creation of an architectural and planning concept for the renovation of the city until 2035 has an international status, so we are waiting for interesting ideas and proposals from all over the world”.

“In Norilsk, the best world practices in the field of territorial development, urban planning and architecture will meet, and the world will receive a unique case for the renovation of a city beyond the Arctic Circle, which declares new development ambitions. We hope that the experience of the participants, which will be used in the development of tender proposals, will give an impetus to the long-term development of Norilsk”, said Sergei Georgievsky, co-founder of the international urban laboratory CENTER Lab.

To participate in the competition, you should fill in an application on the norilsk2035.ru website by September 21; submit a portfolio of completed projects demonstrating relevant experience, as well as an essay describing ideas for the possible future development of Norilsk, taking into account its potential.

The results of the competition will be summed up in October 2022, and its prize fund will be 15.5 million rubles from extra-budgetary funds.
