Well-being for future generations

In 2025, Nornickel will present its 21st non-financial sustainability report. Ahead of this, the company is consulting with external experts, partners, employees, and investors. Inessa Chernova, head of sustainability reporting at Nornickel, shared the results of the survey with participants. Social issues consistently ranked among the top topics.

“Employees and local communities are always interested in the projects the company is implementing in their regions. The environmental aspect is the most prominent, with a focus on air emissions and waste management. This is not surprising, given our flagship projects, the Sulfur Program and Clean Air. For the first time, information security has also made it into the top three”, said Inessa Chernova.

An analysis of both Russian and international standards allowed the company to frame the report’s theme as Well-Being for Future Generations in the Context of the National Agenda.

Environmental agenda

Vice president for ecology and industrial safety at Nornickel, Stanislav Seleznev, opened his remarks by addressing environmental protection:

“We launched our flagship project, the Sulfur Program, in the final days of 2024. We met all our targets and obligations to the government, and we can confidently say that we contributed to the national project Clean Air. This year, we have even more ambitious goals, as the project has reached its designed capacity, and we need to double the amount of sulfur we recycle”.

Regarding the Automatic Emissions Control at the Enterprise project, despite some challenges, pilot operations are concluding in Norilsk, with preparations underway for acceptance by Rospotrebnadzor.

Stanislav Seleznev also discussed decarbonization efforts. Nornickel and RusHydro conducted the largest carbon credit transaction in Russia at that time.

“We felt this was not enough, so we formalized the transition to electric heaters in the Kola Division as a climate project. We completed the entire process and received official confirmation at the end of last year that we had effectively generated over 16 000 carbon credits”, the speaker noted.

In the future, the company plans to formalize all projects related to energy efficiency to obtain additional carbon credits.

Nornickel is actively involved in biodiversity conservation by partnering with nature reserves. The company has implemented a drone to monitor the population of reindeer. Additionally, Nornickel continues its commitment to environmental education.

Industrial and information security

Alexey Martyncev, director of information protection and IT infrastructure at Nornickel, highlighted that many technological processes have been automated:

“Our goal is to ensure stable and uninterrupted business operations”.

To achieve this, the company is enhancing the culture of information security among employees and their families, while supporting national initiatives to foster public-private dialogue in this area.

“The role of business in achieving national goals and sustainable development objectives is crucial. Consequently, Nornickel’s role in ensuring the state’s information security and contributing to an international information security framework is equally important”, Alexey Martyncev emphasized.

Caring for people

Larisa Zelkova, senior vice president and head of HR, social policy, and public relations at Nornickel, provided insights into the staffing strategy, attracting young talent, and the company’s commitment to caring for its people.

The company is establishing a continuous development system for employees, fostering a culture of efficiency and adaptability. It aims to improve the quality of life in the cities where it operates and to support its employees and their families.

“Caring for people encompasses a broad range of activities for us, including various initiatives focused on health, development, sports, and other aspects tailored to our employees. Additionally, we are involved in significant projects aimed at the communities where our enterprises are located”, Larisa Zelkova stated.

At the conclusion of the meeting, attendees engaged in an open discussion, sharing their thoughts and asking questions. A recording of the broadcast Dialogues with Stakeholders for Preparing the 2024 Sustainability Report is available on Rutube via the link.
