Nornickel and Polar university to create advanced engineering school

August 22, 2022

Polar State University defended in Moscow a joint project of the university and the Nornickel company to create an advanced engineering school. It will allow non-standard solution of two problems of Norilsk - personnel and environment.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The school will annually generate 50 engineering and entrepreneurial teams that will develop solutions in the field of unmanned technologies for mining, enrichment and metallurgy, as well as obtaining valuable products from waste and emissions.

“First, we need to replace people in the dangerous and harmful zone with technical devices (at the same time, there are practically no opportunities for preliminary tests here), to achieve the autonomy of complex and continuous processes. Considering the logistics and all production chains, process millions of tons of emissions into a product. We have to launch the engineering and entrepreneurial teams production”, university acting rector Yevgeny Golubev said.

Nornickel will act as an industry task setter for the university’s leading engineering school and as an investor in new technological solutions. Students will work on real projects: bachelors will practice on the basis of Nornickel’s technical support centers, and masters will work in development laboratories for the corporation’s innovative divisions.

The school will affect 75 percent of the university’s educational space and create a powerful technological base. Nornickel will allocate funds for the equipment purchase, as well as five billion rubles for the university campus development.

70 percent of the school’s teachers will be practicing engineers, and for 90 percent of its graduates, individual career paths will be developed depending on the profile. Startups can become part of high-tech companies or work with them as contractors.

Recall that the Advanced Engineering Schools federal project was launched in 2022 at the initiative of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. 91 universities from 41 regions of Russia got into the competitive selection. The grants council will select 30 universities. They will receive state support and will train qualified engineering personnel for high-tech industries.
