Norilsk iconic squares make you fall in love with city

July 23, 2024

TRC local historians suggest walking around the city and taking a closer look at the architectural details.

#ARCTIC. #SIBERIA. THIS IS TAIMYR. The walk around the city will last two hours. During this time, participants will learn a lot of useful, interesting, and sometimes unexpected information. They will also be able to peer into the details of buildings, appreciate their architecture and city perspective.

A Journey Through the Norilsk Main Squares was developed by Ekaterina Bulatova, a Norilsk resident and civil engineer for several generations, an aspiring local historian. She was inspired to do this by the Local History School project of the Taimyr Research Club (TRC), which for the sixth time received support from the Presidential Grants Fund.

The walk starts from Octyabrskaya square, then the group will proceed to Gvardeyskaya square, and then to Komsomolskaya square – three locations and a large layer of information about the city: something was known to the expert group, and something was new to them.

“At the School of Local History, I defended my diploma project, and the topic for it was suggested by an interesting fact about my family. While on vacation, we visit various cities, are interested in their history, but completely lose sight of the history of the city in which we live. When my family moved to Komsomolskaya, 9, and discovered that the most beautiful facades of buildings were visible from our window, we realized that we knew nothing about the architectural history of our city. My daughter and son and I started walking around the city and paying attention to details, then we began to study the history of our architecture: we went to the museum, talked with people who have lived here for a long time. Then the idea came up to organize a tour of the main squares of Norilsk”, said Ekaterina Bulatova.

The excursion is intended for schoolchildren and young people, since its author believes that it can encourage the younger generation to study the history of their city and the place where they live, and therefore begin to treat it with great respect and care.

“I would like people living in Norilsk to fall in love with it again, and it doesn’t matter whether they’re young people or the older generation. I want people to appreciate the talent of Norilsk architects and builders and the splendor of Octyabrskaya, Gvardeyskaya and Komsomolskaya squares. So that they would want to closely examine every brick, every detail of the stucco molding and admire the people who created this city from scratch in the extreme conditions of the Far North”, added Ekaterina.

Earlier, This Is Taimyr reported that in August Norilsk residents will be able to learn about the history of medicine on a new excursion. We also reported that This Is Taimyr’s Russian-speaking version – the Severny Gorod news portal – is among the eight best regional media in the country.
